Grover Essentials - How Are Bamboo Sheets Made

by Princy Kumar on December 01, 2020

Bamboo sheets are one of the most comfortable materials you can use on a bed. Given the smooth and luscious texture of bamboo thread, it’s amazing to think of how bamboo has been used throughout thousands of years for entirely different things: floors, construction, corsets, and even clothing. This extremely versatile fabric, with all its incredible health properties, is a natural wonder.

You may be wondering how the hollow, cylindrical bamboo plant and leaves are processed into the velvety soft bed sheets that are incredibly popular today. Here’s what you need to know about the process of making bamboo sheets:

Growing and Harvesting Bamboo

Most processes of harvesting natural resources have been destructive to the environment. However, growing and harvesting bamboo has spotlighted the harmful effects of haphazard harvesting. These new procedures have led to more environmentally-friendly and sustainable methods of using natural resources to create different textiles.

Bamboo is unique because when it is harvested, the roots remain in place, unlike harvesting other trees. That’s because bamboos are a type of grass. Since the roots are untouched, they begin to sprout chutes after they’ve been harvested. Some species are known to produce even more robust, more quality bamboo chutes after being cut and used.

Making Bamboo Viscose

Once the high-quality source material is harvested, it is then converted into bamboo viscose. We also know this as ‘rayon from the bamboo’ as rayon is made with a similar process. Bamboo viscose is made by processing bamboo through a machine that shaves it down into soft fibers. A process called enzymatic hydrolysis then transforms it into pulp, which bears more resemblance to bamboo sheets than the chutes you associate with the plant.

Manufacturing Bamboo Sheets

Once the pulp is produced, we can now use it to create the signature soft fabric. It also has hypoallergenic and moisture-wicking properties, all of which are natural properties of bamboo. The pulp is then bleached, dried, and ready to be woven into sheets.

At times, bamboo is blended with cotton to produce fabrics or textiles. These are usually composed of 60 to 70 percent bamboo rayon and 30 to 40 percent cotton. Although this makes the material much stronger and durable than 100 percent bamboo, it doesn’t bear the same softness.

Putting It Together

Once the threads are ready, they’re used to create the soft and silky sheets that have put the fabric at the forefront of the bedding market. Bamboo threads are naturally strong and can be stretched thin to cover the entire length of bed sheets. This contributes to the naturally smooth feel found in the fabric.

Apart from the luxurious feel, bamboo sheets feature plenty of health benefits: they’re antibacterial and antimicrobial, properties present in the bamboo plant itself. They are also thermo-regulating, which makes the fabric ideal for beds. It can help you keep cold or warm at night according to your body temperature.

Conclusion

Bamboo sheets are one of the most affordable yet comfortable sheets for your bed. They are sustainably sourced, which ensures an abundant supply for the years to come. They keep allergens, dirt, and grime at bay while wicking off sweat. The incredible softness it provides is plush to the touch, yet durable and robust, leaving you with environmentally-friendly sheets that last a long time.
